What Is Traumatic Brain Injury?
Every year millions of people sustain head injuries. Most of these injuries are minor, resulting in bumps or bruises and have no lasting adverse health effects. Over five hundred thousand of these injuries a year require hospitalization and the most serious forms of head trauma can be life altering.

Traumatic brain injuries are broken into two main categories; closed, and penetrating injuries. A closed head injury usually results from a blunt force striking the skull. A falling object, the head striking a windshield or the ground, injuries from sports or recreational activities can all cause a closed head injury. Another word for this is concussion. A penetrating injury happens when a high velocity object pierces the skull and enters the brain.
Traumatic brain injuries can be life altering. Seek immediate medical attention.
What are some symptoms?
In the immediate aftermath of a head injury some symptoms to watch out for include lethargy, forgetfulness, confusion, slurred speech, double vision and loss of balance. Other symptoms, like bleeding, fluid draining from the nose, mouth or ears, or uneven pupil dilation indicate a very serious injury. Sometimes these symptoms may not show up immediately. The victim may go days or weeks without knowing the severity of their injury.
What Should You Do About It?
It is very important to seek medical attention if you suspect that you or someone you know is exhibiting any of these symptoms. A CT scan or MRI can be very useful in establishing the extent of the injury. Usually, follow up exams on a repeat basis might be necessary. If you think that this type of injury may be the fault of someone who was careless or negligent, your next step is to talk to a lawyer who deals with traumatic brain injury cases.
